I completed my own D of E Bronze and Silver Awards in the 1970’s. I was part of a school D of E group who had the privilege of meeting Prince Philip the Duke Of Edinburgh when he visited Edge Hill College for an opening ceremony. This is now Edge Hill University Ormskirk.
I remember the tight security as the Royal Helicopter landed on the lawn/grassed area near the original college buildings. At the age of 13yrs I was proud and thought the Duke was very tall.
I was with a party from St Albans CE High School, Chorley picked from local schools in Lancashire to attend the visit.
I became a Police Officer serving the people of Lancashire for 32years after learning about the History of the police as part of my Bronze Award. We visited my local Chorley Police Station for sessions there one evening a week. The Police Sergeant I met then told me about the police cadets and that if I got at least 6 o’levels I could apply if still interested when I was due to leave school.
I did and spent two years as a police cadet, then joined at 18 1/2years old. I may not have made this choice of career if I hadn’t met the police Sergeant. 32 years with Lancashire Police. I covered the miners strike, Party Conferences in Blackpool, a visit from Prince Charles when he officially opened Marten Mere Wild Fowl Bird Sanctury, Burscough etc. proud of my time Long service Medal etc. I now support SEN/Autisic 16-19year old as a TA in West Lancashire Community HS sharing my enthusiasm for D of E Awards even at my young 56years of age. I still love the great outdoors and all the experiences D of E offers watching some of our more less able students be surprised by what they can actually achieve.
