I can remember my friend and I doing a residential challenge at a local children’s home. Hearing the stories of the children in care was an eye opener for us and spending time with the children was great, however we were obviously there to help the staff and on our 2nd night there, a Sunday, Jane was tasked with helping to bathe the smaller children and I was asked to clean the school shoes for the following morning. I was pointed towards to shoe cupboard armed with my brushes and polish and emerged 2 hours later, with a collection of shined shoes behind me. It was at that point that I was thanked, with a straight face, for cleaning all of the shoes, including the play shoes which hadn’t seen polish in many a long day!
