Susan Collins
I was presented with the Gold Award by the Duke of Edinburgh on 15 July 1964 at a Buckingham Palace Garden Party.
Being an only child, I had a very quiet upbringing, and so taking part in the Award Scheme through the Worcester Ranger Company gave me confidence in working with other people towards a goal, and it very much broadened my experience of life. I look back very fondly on my time working for the award and I am proud that I took part.
Taking part in the Award Scheme was the deciding factor when being appointed to my first job in 1963. My employer was impressed that I took part, as he felt it showed I had confidence, initiative and perseverance, and could work well with other people.
May the Duke of Edinburgh rest in peace - I shall never forget what he did for me in setting up his Award Scheme.
