Susan

I started my Bronze Award in my early teens at secondary school in Staffordshire. Overcoming disability, I continued with my Silver and Gold Awards independently. Through the Award Scheme, I grew in confidence, developing new life skills, which empowered me to start a career in nursing in the NHS and later, in palliative care and occupational health nursing in the wider community.

In July 1991, it was a great honour and privilege to be chosen, as part of a group from the Duke of Edinburgh’s Award Scheme across Staffordshire, to attend HRH The Duke of Edinburgh’s 70th Birthday celebrations at Windsor Castle - ‘Party in the Park’.

I often look back at my photographs from that day, in hope and confidence that the young people who attended that event, representing the many organisations supported by Prince Philip during his many years of service to young people, also went on to develop essential skills for life, in preparation for their career choices, volunteering opportunities and future employment – giving thanks, not only to our respective leaders and mentors, who gave so freely of their time, but also the Trustees and supporters, behind the scenes, and ultimately to Prince Philip who gave his name to The Duke of Edinburgh’s Award Scheme.

May the Award Scheme long continue. Thank you.
