I did my expedition in July 2007 and it rained the entire time! We got lost several times, faced fog, storms and rogue sheep, and we lost a tent on the way. But it is one of my favourite memories - especially the feeling of happiness upon completing! I didn’t know what to do for the residential aspect of the award. In the end I decided to go big and went to South Africa to work at an animal sanctuary for the summer. That turned out to be one of the best experiences of my life. It also changed my career path as I then went on to return to Africa for a couple more summers and ended up doing a masters degree in conservation. I now run an animal rescue in the UK and we have many volunteers who are completing their own DofE awards and it’s great to help them through.
