I undertook my D of E about 30 years ago now, when I was around 15 years old. It still holds in my mind as one of my best teenage experiences. For my voluntary work I swam with disabled adults - in the 1980's there was very little exposure to disabled children or adults in every day life, so it provided me with a great opportunity to learn and understand from others who were different to me. I am still great friends with some of those I did the expedition with and we still laugh about how lost we got! We made it in the end though and now I am enjoying hearing about my own children's experiences of undertaking their award.
