I completed my bronze, silver and gold awards as a young person in school and sixth form.
As I got older I realised how many skills I had learned by participating in the award.
At the time, I had an absolute blast- all of the elements were a lot of fun, and the expeditions taught me lots about being independent, self reliant and also practical skills.
I remember going through the awards, and realising that as I got physically fitter, each of the awards expeditions became easier in a way.
It was also amazing to spend time with friends, out in the countryside. Even the times when we were lost or tired we still had fun, which carried us through to make sure we got to the end!
I still love camping and walking now, and also became a D of E leader for our local youth service about 6 years ago.
Its amazing to watch the young people getting such a good experience, learning, building friendships and gaining skills and confidence.
