Sagar Das
Did the direct to Gold Programme in 18 months during my sixth form at the John Lyon School, Harrow 1989-91.
Training expeditions in the South Downs, Cairn Gorms, South Wales and finally the qualifying expedition in the Aran Ridge, Snowdonia, 3 nights camping in the tents, and 50 kilometres in 3 days of walking through beautiful, changeable weather and scenery.
My service was helping adults with learning difficulties weekly for a year at the Tanglewood Club, Harrow, and my specialist hobby was electronics, building an amplifier from components as my assessed project.
Had great fun, and was character building, helping in my job applications, going on to win scholarships from British Gas and Unilever for my four years of studying Chemical Engineering at Imperial College and in Nancy for one year.
The D of E scheme and its instructors helped to build my confidence and competence in skills such as map reading and survival.
Would love to volunteer after lockdown is over to help the next generation - please be in touch if there is some way I can serve.
Deep gratitude to the Duke of Edinburgh for his creating this valuable scheme, and condolences To Her Majesty the Queen, and the whole Royal Family on their loss.
With love and respect,
SAGAR DAS, M. ENG
