I always knew about the Award, my Mum was one of the first female Gold award holders. I was excited to get involved and did all 3 awards, plus, as a part time youth worker and volunteer helped lots of others get theirs. I joined an open Gold expedition which included several challenged people and one marine who had ‘never taken so long to walk so short a distance’! I definitely saw parts of Dartmoor I fully intend never to see again. I gained confidence from the Award and interviewers regretted asking a teenage me what I got up to in my spare time.
The Award group I was part of for many years drew young people from all over Bristol, we were able to take groups or individuals who all bonded over a common goal. I am proud that many times we were recommended to those who were facing different life challenges, from physical issues including brain damage to bereavement everyone was welcomed and challenged to do their best and improve from their own level. Gaining hugely in self belief and confidence as they went.
My Award was presented by Brian Blessed after Prince Phillip had met and chatted to each group at St James Palace. Every time I met the Duke at Award presentations and conferences his enthusiasm and sense of humour shone out. He really cared about the young people and has left the Award in safe hands with Prince Edward. Long may it continue
