My best memory of the DofE Gold Award was not the expedition which everyone talks about, but the visit to Buckingham Palace to receive it.
My mother was allowed in (shame my father had to wait outside Buck House) and it was probably one of the best days of her life. She has been showing my photograph to everyone in the last few days and recalling her memories of the day, nearly 40 years ago.
