I was very fortunate to have been presented with my Gold Award by Prince Phillip, Duke of Edinburgh at the Palace of Holyroodhouse Scotland in 1997.
I had the added bonus that my best friend (who I’d done my Bronze and Silver Awards with whilst at school) who was part of the Royal Household staff happened to be working there that weekend and got pictures of myself, mum and Dad from the palace windows before gaining authorisation to come down to the garden and say hello).
I have lots of fond memories of the award scheme (mainly from the expeditions and the challenges which we faced and obstacles we overcame). I was determined to get the gold award despite being at University then so it was more of a challenge but I was determined to complete and aim pleased that I did.
I have actively encouraged my 16 year old son to participate in the scheme and he is now on his journey. The expeditions have been hampered due to Covid but hopefully when the expeditions are safe to happen he will achieve both the bronze and silver awards. He is busy with his Silver at present and is loving it, doing different things and expanding on his knowledge in other areas. I have high hopes that he will gain his gold Award in the next few years. When his 5 year old sister is old enough I will also be encouraging her to participate in the award scheme and I’m sure her brother will do also.
