My journey started 42 years ago when I started working towards my bronze Dofe, I learnt new skills from Fenching, church bell ringing to typing, encouraging me to volunteer giving up my time to help others which 8 have continued to do volunteering for Girlguiding, I made some great friends along the way. Gaining my bronze and silver at school and starting my Gold but as many left my expedition and residential to do, life changed as I started work but then in my early twenties I decided that I would really like to complete the award so made yet more friends and had an amazing week volunteering for the National Trust and going on to completing a rock climbing exploration in NorthWales, fantastic memories. Then 20 years later I was lucky enough to attend Buckingham Palace to see my son receive his Gold Award and seeing Prince Philip talking to all the young people was a great honour. For the past 8 years now I have been running a Dofe group for Girlguiding Exeter and it is so great seeing the girls enjoying their time with new and old friends, learning new skills and undertaking different challenges. I was supervising a Gold Expedition when we heard the news of Prince Philip, it sent a shiver down my spine it made the whole expedition in this unusual time even more meaning. Prince Philip has made such a difference to so many young people and shown them how they are all important. He will be sadly missed.
