I have fond memories of taking part in the DofE award scheme in the 1970's and it was a privilege to be presented with the Gold Award by HRH the Duke of Edinburgh at Buckingham Palace in December 1980.

I believe participating in the awards gave me the confidence to try new interests, and helped develop my team work and problem-solving skills which were essential in my career as an IT project manager. I remember the expeditions being tough but they gave me an understanding of what could be achieved with good preparation and support. I am quite sure that my ability to read a map and use a compass are a lasting outcome of the training we undertook to complete the expeditions.

I am very grateful to HRH Prince Philip for instigating the scheme and thankful to have had the opportunity to take part.
