Nigel Haslock
Participating via Saddleworth School starting the Bronze Award at 14, my fondest memories are associated with embarking on the hikes and expeditions in the Peak District , Pennines and Lake District. At the time I did not realise the positive impact the principles of DofE would have to my adulthood.
Learning new skills , team work and physical challenges and endurance ( particularly in wind , snow and rain “ up on those hills” ) to complete the expeditions !!
I credit DofE of introducing me to the principle of getting involved in the community where I live both then and to the present day , but along the way discover your strengths and weaknesses but most importantly make friends and have fun along the way.
Meeting Prince Philip in 1983 at Buckingham Palace to receive the Gold Award was a very proud moment for me and in particular for all the Mums or Dads watching on in the audience !!!
I’m confident DofE will continue to thrive and grow in the years to come for future young people to participate in.
