In the early 1960's I undertook my bronze award. The first night we found a field to camp in and I decided we ought to ask the land owner. Eventually I found a large imposing house and I asked the gentlemen who answered the door if it would be ok to camp on his land? The gentlemen turned out to be Sir John Hunt who along with the Duke started the DOE award scheme. He seemed genuinely pleased to help us out and in the morning we woke up to a jug of milk outside every tent. We were very touched by this act of kindness. I am now 71 but still remember it.
