May Mattock

On my expedition day for my bronze DofE we were walking through this random field in the middle of nowhere and we finally find a main road after walking for hours. Myself and everyone in my group agreed that this was the next checkpoint, so we sat there and waited for at least 20 minutes to meet up with Andrew (our youth leader) like we had been for each check point - and he never turned up. We were all very confused because for every other checkpoint Andrew had been there before we’d even got there ourselves. Next to where we were sat down on the pavement we saw a car and we recognised the colour and model of the car. We looked inside the windows of it and saw hiking gear in the back seat, and we came to the conclusion that this was Andrew’s car, and he had parked it to go and look for us. After deciding that this was his car, we thought we would be clever so we got Clem’s pen and Hayley’s notepad from their bags and we wrote a note: “group 3 have been here, passed this check point”. We placed the note inside the window wipers of the car (so it wouldn’t blow away) and we left and carried on walking to get to our next checkpoint. As we are walking away, we notice this couple walking towards the car with their dog and they were standing in front of the car, staring at our note. We start to panic and we all rush back apologetically because we know what we have done. It turns out that the car never belonged to Andrew, it was a completely different car, and that we were actually lost and in completely the wrong place - walking in the wrong direction. In conclusion, we had to endure in a very awkward and embarrassing conversation with this poor couple that thought it was a creepy message from a murderer or something of the sort.
