Matt Martin
I had the most amazing time during my Duke of Edinburgh Award, completing the Bronze, Silver and Gold Awards.
The challenges, sense of accomplishment, trials and tribulations and teamwork experienced along the way are experiences I'll never forget.
Our Gold expedition in the Lake District was incredible - What a place! It rained for 3 days straight and coming across the Black Sail Youth Hostel where we could just stop and have a cuppa was unbelievable! Camping under the stars and in the tranquility of the lakes with friends was a true treasure.
I was also lucky enough to travel to to America and work at a Camp for the residential section of my Gold Award, which is and will no doubt remain one of the highlights of my life. I was also lucky enough to meet the Duke of Edinburgh and chat with him at my Gold Awards presentation. His sense of wit and humour was something I'll never forget. He took the time to chat to me and at the time I did not realise how significant this was, it is only know I am truly realising the incredible gesture from him!
I am now in the privileged position of running the Duke of Edinburgh award at my school and am humbled by the opportunity this position affords me. Seeing the look of sheer panic and delight on students faces when they are put outside of their comfort zone but manage to achieve their goals and defy their fears is an incredibly fulfilling feel.
all of this would not be possible without the Duke and the creation of this award! Thank you for the award and thank you for the time and effort in creating this!
