One thing I was struck by when reflecting on my participation in the scheme, was that even though the Gold Award is the most rigorous and challenging - for me it was also the most straightforward. I say this because taking part in the Bronze and Silver Awards inspired me to use my time to gain new expertise, help others and explore the outdoors. So, by the time it came to begin the third award the ethos of the scheme had become my lifestyle, not just a temporary phase; whether it be learning a new skill, playing a new sport, providing a service to the community or completing an expedition it had become second nature to me. It’s an outlook on life that’s stayed with me ever since in both my personal life and my career as a senior engineering manager in the defence industry.

Above all, the DofE Award Scheme has given me more confidence in my abilities and the sense of achievement gained from completing a goal. It made me the leader I am today.
