The D of E programme in the Bahamas was a game changer for me
It instilled in me a sense of adventure, environmental awareness and service
The highlight of the programme was the Gold expedition which involved sailing to the out islands of the Bahamas, camping and learning survival techniques
I had the very good fortune to receive my gold medal from the Duke himself at Holyrood palace in Edinburgh in 1974 and was impressed that he took time to speak with each of us
The D of E scheme is a terrific programme for the youth and more important today than ever
