Two memories: first one of my Mum fizzing like a roman candle as we went into Buckingham Palace to a reception for award holders.
The second memory was being told that a D of E Gold was "as good as another A level". Indeed it is an accomplishment that communicates something very valuable other than your academic ability to a potential employer
I went on to a Cambridge degree, four careers including academic research, flying light aircraft in Africa for a Christian organisation, IT, and I'm still involved in industrial research in my 70's.
