I was honoured to meet the Duke with my fellow expedition team members at St. James' Palace in the early 90s. Despite being told not to try to shake his hand or chat too much with him, as there were 100s receiving the award, we were delighted when he shook our hands and asked where we had walked for our expedition. On telling him it was in the Yorkshire Dales, he quipped 'Did you manage to sample some local colour?'. Well we had to say we had, we could hardly pretend we hadn't!
