I had a wonderful time completing the awards almost 30 years ago. I wasn’t particularly academic but I was determined that I wanted to be a therapeutic radiographer & treat cancer. I didn’t achieve the required A- levels, but I was still determined. I was eventually offered an interview. I spoke at about my DofE award & the importance of working in a team & how this was transferable to working in a cancer team. My passion determination meant that I was offered a place. My school teachers told me to forget university but that drive I had got from the award meant that I wasn’t going to give up! I achieved a 2:1 honours degree in radiotherapy. I worked in the NHS for 20 years. I now am a lecturer supporting students... I brim with pride when I student asks if they can have time off to go to London to collect their award... I know & understand what they have achieved. My own daughter has now started, using my old rucksack!! Thank you Sir.. the award scheme truly changed my life & continues to do so... that’s a true legacy.
