I remember the first time doing the walk for the Bronze Award, it was only two days and one night, but I was dreading it because of the wet wintery weather and it was my first time challenging myself to go on a walk with a huge backpack. However, after that walk I could feel that both my physical and mental health were stronger. I wanted to strengthen myself even more, to go on and take the Silver and Gold Awards. The Silver expedition had become more enjoyable as I had gained experience from the Bronze. By the time it got to the Gold Expedition, I felt fully prepared and energised. It was about planning with my team mates, the team work, my determination, resilience and pushing my limits. When I have achieved my award, I felt like my mission was accomplished. I felt satisfied and successful that I had done such an enriching and meaningful task.
I think that DofE brought me confidence, and furthermore, I was really excited to develop my skills set further. I learnt to become more patient with children through volunteering at a special needs school for over a year. I achieved my goals of passing my grade 8 piano and grade 7 bassoon. I participated in more teamed sports, and it urged me to become healthier through exercise. For the residential, I went to Bhutan to teach at a school and living with other volunteers. I became more culturally aware and it brought me joy as I helped these children.
Thank you for setting up this award Prince Phillip, it has really played a major role in my teenage years, and I will take on board all of the skills and memories that will no doubt shape me in to a better person for the future.
