Jane Whitcher (O'Neill)

To complete my Gold Award I was lucky enough to be chosen to take part in an International Triangular Exchange in 1983 hosted by (Birmingham) UK, Canada and Trinidad & Tobago. For my International leg of the event I spent a month in Nova Scotia, Canada, self funded from sponsored events. As a mixed group of 17/18 year olds from the 3 nations it gave us a unique opportunity to share and understand aspects of our lives & cultures whilst completing our Gold expeditions and Community Service projects.
Our expedition was completed within the incredibly scenic Cabot Trail in the Cape Breton Highlands. Along with navigating the challenging tourain we were lucky enough to whale watch and even spot wild moose from a distance.
I was lucky enough to have my Gold Award presented at Buckingham Palace by the Duke himself, an experience never to be forgotten. I know for certain that my participation in the Award Scheme in its entirety from Bronze to Gold helped me grow from a shy, quiet girl into one with confidence & a voice which definitely helped shape my future.
