Jake Taylor
I completed all three levels of the DofE award scheme, picking up a diverse range of transferable skills along the way whilst also pushing myself out with my comfort zone.
The award scheme was a thoroughly enjoyable experience, and although testing at times, it has proven extremely beneficial as I have progressed from school into university. One of the best things from my DofE experience was having the opportunity to volunteer at my local Red Cross branch - this gave me a unique insight into the running of a charity shop and allowed me to build long-lasting connections within the community.
The expeditions were the most challenging part I undertook to achieve my awards. Having to be self-sufficient whilst also keeping the spirits of my group high provided me with unique skills that I would have been unable to achieve in another environment. The expeditions did allow me to explore areas of remote Scotland that otherwise would not have been possible. Despite the fact I am unlikely to ever sleep in a tent again, the expeditions did allow me to appreciate the beauty of the landscape on my doorstep.
Overall, achieving my DofE Award is an achievement I will proudly carry for the rest of my life. The award acts as insightful conversation starter and has given me the skills I continue to use on a daily basis.
