I have a great memory of my DofE bronze expedition and hope to be able to do the Gold Expedition this year!
I formed strong new friendships within my expedition group and we had many laughs together. One of my favourites memories was singing ‘Livin’ on a Prayer’ (Ohhh we’re halfway there..) altogether at the top of our lungs. We were very happy and proud of ourselves for having gotten half way to the camp and stayed in good spirits for the rest of the day. I felt a strong sense of teamwork in that moment which carried on for the remainder of the expedition.
Something I learnt was to keep going and keep supporting others in my group, making sure everyone was always happy with the pace and got frequent breaks. On the real expedition, it rained the whole time. The second day was definitely very cold and all our belongings were wet but we kept as positive as possible by talking and taking sheltered breaks.
Although there were definitely some tough parts to the expedition such as carrying our heavy bags, the bad weather or being extremely cold at night, my overall experience was a very positive one with the positive parts outweighing the negative. The sense of independence from adults, the beautiful landscapes and sense of teamwork were all my personal highlights.
I really recommend DofE to anyone as you will get so many new and beneficial skills through your skill, physical and volunteering sections as well as the practise and real expedition.
