It was on 12 July 1966 that 10 of us from Carre’s Grammar School, Sleaford, Lincs, met the Duke in his back garden to receive our Gold Awards before the soccer fans amongst us dashed off to Wembley to see the first game of the soccer World Cup against Uraguay. In the garden that day, receiving her award, was an unknown young lady who 28 years later was to become my stepmother, after my mother passed away. For the last 10 years every two years most our group of olden goodies have met up for a hiking weekend, with wives/partners, and to drink copious toasts to the Duke....and others. The last time was in Snowdonia in 2019 (see photo) with the Brecon Beacons planned for September this year, COVID permitting.
