I remember arriving at Durham University from a Gateshead Comprehensive School back in 1983. I had never heard of DofE and when I heard people talking about it, my first thought was that I would have so loved the opportunity to try something like that. So here we are, nearly 40 years later , I am a DofE supervisor and assessor and hopefully the young people who I help gain the award get those chances that I would have loved to do. Only one of my 3 children did DofE, that one achieved gold, and admitted that he only stuck to it because of his mum! But I'm really proud that he did achieve his gold,(even if he ignored the email regarding the presentation, but that's another story and not one to tell here).
