I was one of 3girls who were the first to do DofE in Bournemouth We completed our silver award in 1962 and were awarded certificates and boys tie pins there being no distinctive girls badge.We had to set up our own invigilators and mentors for many of the girl focussed activities However Sir John Hunt came to see us in our First Aid training. He was the leader of the successful Everest Expedition when Hillary and Tensing reached the summit When I went to college in 1962 I would have liked to go on to gold but there was no structure in place at that time in that place and gold had to be completed by the age of 21 but what I learned from both bronze and silver awards was that everything was possible with preparation dedication and teamwork
