Haydyn Tanner
I completed my Gold Award in 1985 and had the utmost honour to meet and speak with Prince Philip when I received my award in St James Palace.
The Gold expedition was one of the hardest thing I had done to that point and I showed me that if I wanted something I could push myself harder than I thought I could take.
The DofE experience gave me the confidence to go further. In my adult life I have led expeditions across the world, allowing young people not just from the UK, but from Ghana as well, to complete parts of their award in challenging and unique situations.
I also took part, and led, conservation expeditions to Belize, working on setting up marine reserves to protect the largest barrier reef in the Western Hemisphere.
I am currently a Gold Expedition assessor and really enjoy watching young people go on the journey that I went on 36 years ago!
Being an Air Cadet, I was always very proud to wear the Gold DofE cypher on my uniform and I am still massively proud to say that I am a Gold Award holder!
