I first heard about the DofE award when I was 15. This was something I had never heard about but I saw the opportunity to be in the outdoors and challenge myself in a completely new way. Little did I know that this was more than just camping! I experienced many different things whilst completing my Bronze award and it was safe to say I was hooked, and knew I wanted to be someone who held their Gold Award. In 6th form I went on to completing my Gold award. This is where I learnt so much, especially about myself. Over the years I built an ambition to become a P.E. teacher, but wasn't sure if I were cut out for this because of my self-confidence. Nevertheless, it was my passion and for my volunteering I undertook assisting in P.E. lessons and fell in love with this career path even more. From doing this I knew I had the confidence to pursue this. I also gave basketball a try for my physical which then lead to representing the Folkestone team and then on to The Portsmouth University Basketball team! I also learnt to drive for my skills which was such an achievement. Yet, the real challenge was the expedition. The countryside around Folkestone is beautiful but doesn't compare to the mountains in North Wales. I had never navigated in wild country let alone climbed a mountain. The physical and mental challenge of this was huge but the bond my team had made got us through, and the view at the top of Snowdon was something I will never forget (plus the relief of reaching the top).
Since doing this award it has opened so many doors for me. I am proud to say I am now a P.E. Teacher who completed their Gold award. I enjoy travelling solo around the world and discovering new challenges. I now also manage and lead the Duke of Edinburgh Award in my school were we have students completing all levels of the award. I hope I and others will continue the DofE legacy of HRH and allow young people to achieve and experience what I did! Thank you for my opportunity Prince Philip!
