Graham Dorrat
I have been a DofE leader in Shetland for almost 35 years. I was saddened to hear of the Duke of Edinburgh's death. I had the privilege of having spoken with him at a number of Gold presentations.
I have always been impressed by the way the Duke of Edinburgh designed the Award; to be so broad and inclusive of life skills, that any young person can find activities to do and improve at. It is the individual's improvement and not the achievement of specific standards, which makes DofE achievable for anyone provided they put in the commitment. It is great seeing young people achieve their goals and grow in confidence. This is all thanks to Prince Philip's far-seeing idea which endures, as it was way ahead of its time.
