Taking part in my Duke of Edinburgh Award at Silver and Gold level gave me lifelong interests in many things but particularly walking, camping and First Aid.
It also led me to be a DofE leader for many years, hoping to let young people experience new activities and particularly the Scottish countryside.

At Silver level we walked through the grounds of Balmoral on our expedition, right past the back door! The royal family were not at home.

Our Gold Award presentation took place in the Palace of Holyroodhouse in June 1974 and we met the Duke as a small group of six. He was very interested in finding out what we had taken for the different sections.
