Eileen Cherriman
I worked for and achieved a Bronze, Silver and Gold Award through a local Girls' Brigade Company.
My Gold Award was presented to me on 26th. November 1964 by HRH The Duke of Edinburgh at Buckingham Palace.
I was one of three girls who were the first to gain a D of E Gold Award in West Sussex.
When I applied for a certain Job I was given it because I had a D of E Gold award.
I went on to promote the scheme in 1st. Horsham Girls Brigade Company and the Company gained
44 Bronze, 9 Silver and 2 Gold awards.
I met The Duke of Edinburgh on another occasion whilst still running the scheme and that time he called me 'An Old Retainer'
One of my son's became a 2nd generation Award holder when he also achieved The Gold award.
