55 years ago when I was doing my Bronze Award I met Prince Philip. He came to see us doing our Skills section. He was the epitome of a perfect gentleman and politely appeared interested in our ‘beauty’ course.
Since then I have continued to be impressed by the Award. When I was SENCO for 24 years at a large comprehensive school I encouraged my students to participate because the Award naturally differentiates and on my retirement 6 years ago I became a DofE Coordinator at a large London Academy. I continue to promote the DofE because I genuinely see it’s value in the present day. It has stood the test of time.
I am greatly saddened by the death of Prince Philip. His immense foresight and was ahead of his time in many ways. He was an excellent role model and with the DofE Award an ambassador providing opportunity for young people to be recognised for challenging themselves whilst gaining confidence and increased self-esteem through pursuing their interests.
The DofE Award spans race, class, ability and socio-economic background enabling young people to gain confidence beyond the confines of the National Curriculum. It also provides an excellent forum for acknowledging transferable skills which are so greatly valued in present day employment.
Prince Philip has left a great legacy to our young people.
