I am looking at the Gold Award Certificate hanging on the wall in my Malibu, California home. It's dated May 18th 1960, which must mean I was one of the early recipients of the award.
I remember the award ceremony at Buckingham Palace 61 years ago - and I remember it was the first (and only) time my mother wore a hat!
But more importantly I remember the pride I felt having made it through the 3 stages of the scheme - a pride I have felt every time, throughout my life, that I see images or news footage of the Duke of Edinburgh - a reminder of the leadership and inspiration he gave me then, now and all the years between.
