The lasting memory of my Gold Award was during my residential stay at a home for children with disabilities, There were two young boys one with Cerebral Palsy who valiantly and daily tried to do the buttons of his shirt, he refused help and never gave up and the second had Brittle Bone disease. He told me with a smile that I should not drop him as he would break! I was so humbled and have never forgotten the life lessons those two taught me - however dire a situation you never give up and in the face of adversity humour can lift a moment and make life bearable. I would not have experienced any of this is the late 60's without the Award Scheme. HRH's legacy through the DofE is not only inspiring but enduring.
