It was on 31st March, 1987 that I received my Gold Duke of Edinburgh's Award at St James's Palace. I was slightly disappointed that it was not to take place at Buckingham Palace, but it did not take away from the proud and privileged feelings I had. At that time you were only allowed 1 parent to accompany you, but I had my Mum there because she was one of the leaders in The Campaigners movement. I felt very grateful that both my parents could attend. The friends I had completed my Award with were Janet Beg, Linda Simpson, Gillian Heywood and Nicola Crompton, who also attended on that day. I remember feeling a bit nervous when we were waiting for the Duke to enter the grand room we were in. He came quite close and asked about our expeditions. I did 150 miles cycling from Leyland, where I lived, to Colwyn Bay in Wales. We stayed in youth hostels along the way. I really do feel that working for my D of E Award helped me gain confidence in myself and my abilities. I remember I did a lot of cooking and baking at the time. I need to re-employ those skills again. I used to be quite shy and taking part in this scheme really helped me to socialise and learn people skills, which have served me well during my life. Thanks for giving me and my friends those opportunities.
