Christina Keyworth
As a youth worker (adult life) and D of E (19 yrs) the Award has made a huge positive impact on both my personal family life and on the many young people in South East Holderness, a very rural and deprived area. Participants, now with children, come back to recall their Award days and the enjoyment of the challenges it gave them:
Discovering the outdoors and areas such as Yorkshire Dales, North Yorkshire Moors, Yorkshire Wolds, Howardian Hills, Nidderdale, The Lake District, East Yorkshire has seen young people develop a love and permanent interest in outdoor sports, environment and conservation issues.
Exped: stories are the life and soul of D of E vols:/leaders when meeting up, 1st exped: 2002, cycling, 1st question where are we going Christina? and 2 punctures before we left the village! the walking boots that completely parted on the 1st day of a silver exped: tied up with bootlaces, gaffer tape until a day later a pair size 12! were found in a charity shop, a gold group missing on the N.Y.M. for 6 hours unseen walked into camp 11pm totally unconcerned, had chosen to sleep in the afternoon after early start! a female who slung her boots off, bag off and cried buckets on the side of A1079, gave her my boots for the rest of the exped: did brilliantly and went on to Gold, sat in camp toilets 1/2am consoling participants and leaders!
Volunteering really brings on young people in confidence, team work, empowerment and improving young people's image within their community. So many different opportunities-logging days, community events, conservation days and residentials at Spurn Point, renovating gardens, fundraising, charity work, upkeep of playparks. Tug of war with felling a tree when the rope breaks, the BBQS at the end.
Physical days out to celebrate just being together, snow walks from Goathland to Grosmont and back, cars brakes smoking, travelling on NYMR, a first for many, lost in forest going round in circles to reappear at starting point.
Thank you Sir
