I have found my certificate (dated 14 October 1965) which states that I passed the Silver standard of the Duke of Edinburgh's Award. The certificate is signed 'Philip' and the Silver badge was presented to me by Sir John Hunt.

My secondary school was in Weston-super-Mare where I lived for the first 18 years of my life. We were encouraged to undertake the DOE's Award Scheme and, although I am not an outdoor type, I did mange to survive the Adventure weekend under canvas on the Mendip Hills with two school friends. Unfortunately the weather was dreadful with strong winds and heavy rain, the tent was soaked. On the way home we camped by the side of a road and cooked baked beans.
I still have a photo - somewhere!

I enjoyed the Service section of the Awards and completed Red Cross first aid and mothercraft courses.

The Duke of Edinburgh's passing is very sad but has brought back some distant memories of his valuable Award Scheme.
