I was fortunate enough to meet the Duke during my Gold Award presentation in 2016. I remember being so nervous just before the duke entered the room we were in but as soon as he turned the corner the room lit up and suddenly we were all at ease. I have to be honest, I was so overwhelmed I can’t remember much else, except the sentiment the Duke left us with: “When I started this awarded people advised me to designs things separately for boys and girls, that girls wouldn’t be capable of the same achievements as boys, but you being stood here today alongside all those who stood here before you are the truth. That these awards are for everyone”. This sentiment is what led me to become an ambassador for the DofE awards - they truly are for everyone.
