I started the DofE awards in school when I was 13 yrs old doing the Bronze, Silver and Gold Awards. I thoroughly enjoyed the whole experience, learning new skills from helping out at a handicapped brownie and guide week camp and how everyone was so willing and able to try all the activities. I realised that people can do anything if they put their mind to it.
When I did my Gold walk in the Lake District in various weather conditions from snow to really hot days when the assessors actually allowed us to visit a ice cream shop in Ullswater, having to head off the route as we were all suffering from heat exhaustion. We had sheep join us over night whilst we melted ice in the billy cans for water to cook our meal. We didn’t think we could finish but seeing the sight of all the assessors holding cold drinks at the finish line, made us all determined to race to the end.
I learnt a lot about sharing skills and believing in myself. The day I went to St James Palace to collect the gold Award with my Mum was totally brilliant and such an amazing experience. The Duke was so lovely and put everyone at ease.
I am so glad the scheme will continue for years to come.
