Cara Williams
As a teenager I achieved my Bronze, Silver & Gold Awards through New Mills School. I remember Prince Philip had very shiny shoes at the presentation at St James Palace!
For my Silver & Gold expeditions, our safety assessor was Edward Williams, a previous recipient of all three awards through New Mills School. He was in the first group from the school to achieve the Gold Award. Their expedition took place on the Isle of Arran in horrendous weather conditions. They succeeded despite broken ridge poles and the like.
Several years later, after being safety assessors for more young people from New Mills School whilst we were at university, we were married!
So where did he want to take me & our three children to celebrate his 50th birthday last April? Arran, of course! Unfortunately this has been delayed for the second year but we’re hopeful for next Easter!
Our children are (or have been) involved in the scheme. Our youngest has his Bronze & Silver & is working on his Gold. Our middle child achieved her Gold but her presentation is delayed due to Covid. Our eldest never had the opportunity at school as the scheme wasn’t offered but he is now doing his Gold at university.
It’s safe to say that, as a family, we owe a huge amount to the Duke of Edinburgh scheme! It will always hold a special place in our hearts, as will Prince Philip himself.
