To honour the legacy of HRH Prince Philip, I wanted to share my story and fantastic memories of completing Gold D of E, which were made even more special by meeting up with my oldest friend (and fellow Gold Award holder) this weekend for a walk.

During school I was lucky enough to have the opportunity to complete my Bronze, Silver and Gold D of E Awards, following in the footsteps of my 2 older sisters who had completed them all before me. I completed all 3 awards with my oldest friend Molly, who I had known since I was just 3 years old.

For our Gold Award, we raised money to travel to Morocco to undertake our expedition, climbing Mount Toubkal (4,167m) and supporting local schools and villages by building a road to allow water and food to travel into the village. It was an unbelievable experience and something I still remember vividly to this day!

For our residential activity, Molly and I volunteered at Vitalise for a week in our summer holidays. Vitalise is a charity which offer respite holidays for disabled people. Although very daunting to start with, we ended up having a fantastic week supporting the guests, taking them on day trips, fully caring for their needs and staying away from home for a week. In hindsight this volunteering experience really did give me such confidence and self belief that you can cope in many different situations.

Molly is getting married in May and this weekend I met Molly for her ‘hen do’ where she was undertaking a remarkable challenge by completing the Yorkshire Wolds Way walk (approx 70 miles) in just 2 days. I am delighted to say she completed it and it was lovely to be able to join her for a leg of the walk!

I feel very honoured to have completed the awards and attended St James’ Palace to receive my award from Prince Edward. Thank you to all the volunteers and everyone involved in making D of E so special!
