Briony Hek

I had the great privilege of undertaking my Bronze, Silver and Gold Duke of Edinburgh Awards right through secondary school. At first I wasn’t sure if I would be up to the task and was encouraged to take part in the award scheme by my friend. Looking back I could not be more grateful that I did, the experience has been life changing.
As a teenager I learned to cook, volunteered in charity shops, mentored younger students at school in science and sport. Took part in field hockey and done countless walking expeditions on the Isle of Arran.
During my gold award I was exceptionally lucky to take part in two trips abroad. I had the opportunity to visit Boston, USA and play hockey with American school girls for my ‘residential’ unit. I also got to visit Turkey sailing, as for my gold ‘expedition’ I learned the theory and practical skills to become a royal yachting accredited crew member.
The confidence and opportunities I have benefited from due to the Duke of Edinburgh Award have continued to shape my adult life. It was a brilliant talking point in my university applications and I am now a qualified dental surgeon.
However, most importantly for me, the ‘expedition’ sections helped me come out of my shell and build lasting relationships with my peers. I met my now husband whilst at school and bonded during our DofE adventures. We became boyfriend and girlfriend at 16, engaged at 20, married at 22 and are enjoying our happily ever after. We both love the outdoors and look forward to many more ‘expeditions’ together! I hope and pray we get to experience 73 years together like the Queen and Prince Philip.
Thank you for the wonderful memories, what a brilliant legacy.
