Beverley Karia
I took part in the Duke of Edinburgh award scheme in the 1970s at school in South Wales, and completed the gold award in 1973.
The expedition to Snowdonia was a challenge, climbing a different mountain every day, including Snowdon, often in pouring rain. I also supported an elderly neighbour for several years, made soft toys and learned so much along the way.
The highlight though was a residential placement in a local Hospice. It was following this placement that I made the decision to train as a nurse, something I would probably never have considered, had I not been part of the award scheme. I’ve had a wonderful career and have never looked back. Thank you Duke of Edinburgh.
