Andrew King
I received my Gold award from HRH on 13/7/1971, during the second week of my training at Regional Police Training Centre, Eynsham Hall, Oxon. Having left school at 15 years of age without any educational qualifications I completed the Silver award at School in May 1967 (including a month spent in the outward bound centre in Patterdale, Cumbria, and undertook the gold award through the Oxfordshire Army Cadet Force.
I joined Thames Valley Constabulary on 5/7/1971 and without doubt my achievement in obtaining the two awards were a huge factor in me being appointed as a Constable. This couple with my record in the cadet force impressed the recruiting Superintendent, who was interested (in my interview), in the tasks undertaken on the DOE scheme.
I retired after 32 years police service in 2003 having worked in the CID, Special Branch and Fraud Squad and met HRH Duke of Edinburgh at Royal Ascot whilst I was on protection duties with the Queen and HRH.
I have fond memories of the DOE scheme which helped to shape my future career, and without which would have been very different.
The Photograph is me with my late mother Aileen at Buckingham Palace on 13/7/1971.
RIP.
