Andrew Fletcher OBE

Our family trust has donated to the DoE and some of our junior members are Gold Award holders. While at Loretto School in the late 50s I attended a Dalguise camp for youngsters from Edinburgh and Glasgow along with public-school students, initiated by the Duke just before the DoE scheme was fully launched. A very formative experience for me; I learnt a language I did not know existed ! The Queen and the Duke had visited Loretto for a day as part of its centenary(1860 ?); some of us were waiting in the 6th form library in trepidation for the Duke's entry. He came in, took a deep breath and immediately said "Hm . . . a smell of new paint !" Total change in the atmosphere . . . . !
