As an American growing up in the UK, the Duke of Edinburgh’s award allowed me the unique opportunity to see and experience the country I consider home, in ways many of my American peers on the military installation did not. Through expeditions I traveled throughout the English countryside, hiking through the Lake District, exploring Tintagel Castle, and even learning canoeing and water navigation skills.

The skills I learned throughout this program have helped shape the woman I have become. The award gave me confidence to pursue an appointment to the United States Naval Academy and ultimately earn my commission as an Officer in the United States Navy.

The Award taught me to believe in myself, set goals and accomplish them, but most importantly to enjoy the journey and not focus on the end state.

I am thankful for the memories and experiences DofE has given me. DofE will always hold a special place in my heart.
