Alex Blackmore

To put it simply, the Duke of Edinburgh award schemes have been the most enjoyable and rewarding activities I have done in my life.

Completing the Bronze and Silver awards helped me develop my leadership and teamwork skills, and has kickstarted my love for hiking and the outdoors that will always be a large part of who I am.

I remember the first assembly we were given in year 8, our Dofe leader showed us pictures of inactive volcanoes that he had climbed during a university trip, and subsequently encouraging us to participate in the Dofe Bronze award. Little did I know that the assembly would start a journey that is still going on to this day.

My gold assessed expedition is still my greatest personal achievement. After completing our expedition during the heatwave (35 degrees C), we were told that our group was the best gold group the expedition staff had ever seen. This was a emotional moment, with hours worth of trekking catching up with us.

The Duke of Edinburgh award scheme has given me invaluable life lessons and a 'never give up' attitude that I am sure will benefit me wherever I go.

I am almost finished with my Gold award, completing it will be a fantastic achievement, with many enjoyable experiences faced along the way.

HRH Prince Philip has also inspired me with regards to my career after university, as I am going to apply to join the Royal Navy as an officer.

RIP Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh
